By Ari Aster’s follow up to Hereditary has shifted its release from August 9 to July 3, just in time for you to celebrate the independence of our great United States of America with colorful blasts of explosive fear-diarrhea.
Midsommar follows a troubled young couple as they celebrate a nine-day festival that happens once every 90 years with a bunch of puritanical hippie psychos, and it’s the first film that I think has the chops to get the weird-flower-people-cult formula right since the original Wicker Man. Every shot looks blooming, colorful, and plenty eerie, and I can’t wait to see it. I know early-spring might not count as midsummer, but could we just have it now? Please?
Hereditary was a deep dive into familial horror that I won’t soon wipe from my psyche, and though Midsommar looks to be more focused on mysterious strangeness than abject horror, I have no doubt it’ll be something worth witnessing.
