Three big things happened at he box office this weekend. The first is, of course, that The Curse of La Llorona came in number one, outperforming expectations with $26.5 million. That’s a very good box office for a movie that had very little buzz and opened over a holiday that has nothing to do with horror. Critics also panned the film so it will be interesting to see if it has any legs at all or if this was just a quick horror grab that will fade fast.
Second, and probably least important, is the release of Breakthrough. The movie came in second with $11.1 million. That’s not very notable, but what is is that the faith film is the first movie to be released by Fox under Disney. This is officially a Disney movie. Kind of cool.
Finally, in the same area of Disney making more money, Captain Marvel actually saw a bump this weekend. Despite losing a plethora of theaters the box office was up 6%. That’s relatively unheard of, but the power of Avengers: Endgame knows no bounds. Folks flocked out to make sure they were up-to-date before the movie drops next week.
