You can’t say that Pokemon Detective Pikachu didn’t try.
Despite pulling in the best opening weekend for any movie based on a video game ever, Pokemon Detective Pikachu still fell short of Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame and failed to take the top spot at the weekend box office. Coming in at 54.5 million dollars, Detective Pikachu is coming in well under budget domestically but worldwide it seems to be doing all right in that regard.
Endgame retained its stranglehold on the top spot with 63.3 million dollars but is starting to show signs of slowing. After posting a monster opening weekend, the box office take for Endgame has dropped by over half for the following two weeks.
It was a big weekend for new releases, but outside of Detective Pikachu, none of them really fared too well. The Hustle, despite coming in third only managed to take in 13.5 million dollars in its opening weekend. Poms opened in sixth place with 5.4 million dollars and Tolkien came in a largely disappointing ninth place with only 2.2 million dollars. Tolkien wasn’t a small opening either, it was on 1,497 screens which isn’t a good sign for the biopic.
If I were a betting Marzano I’d say that this week is going to be the last week Endgame retains the number one spot. We’re in the heart of blockbuster season and with John Wick 3: Parabellum coming out this week, and Aladdin the following week, The Avengers must eventually fall.
Don’t count on A Dog’s Journey though, that looks like crap and Jesse will be all over it.
