By There was a bit of doubt last week that Toy Story 4 was going to keep its legs since its opening weekend was below the admittedly staggering expectations the studio had for it. However, things seem just fine. The movie dropped 52% but still came out number one over the weekend and with scant family fair opening over the July 4th weekend it should continue to bring in money. $58 million on the second week is nothing to scoff at for sure.
However, the big winner this week is really Danny Boyle’s underwhelming Yesterday. The $17 million it brought in is absolutely stellar for a Boyle film and the studio has got to be happy. This is one of Boyle’s biggest openings and above expectations for the film, which offers some counter programming to the big blockbusters and sequels littering the summer season. It will easily push past its $26 million budget and make the studio plenty of cash. Then again licensing Beatles music isn’t cheap…
Annabelle Comes Home on the other hand did not fare as well. The movie opened early on Wednesday and barely cracked $30 million, pulling only $20 million in over the weekend. Five day openers usually push much higher thanks to the extra days but it seems folks weren’t as excited for the killer doll as they use to be. Maybe audiences got tired of the gimmick with Child’s Play opening last week. It is, however, a Blumhouse film meaning it makes money even if it flops, which this definitely didn’t.
