Be still my Star Trek loving heart. If showrunner Michael Chabon wanted to give every Trek fan in Hall H multiple orgasms with the SDCC trailer for Star Trek: Picard he succeded wildly. This thing is half nostalgia, half fan-service, and all awesome. Where the first trailer gave us a hint at a darker Picard and a deeper story, this one basically goes all in on action, adventure, and cameos. So… many… cameos.
To begin with we get Data showing up, which makes sense, but then there’s the Borg briefly. At the beginning we get lines that reference one of Star Trek: The Next Genrations‘s greatest episodes, ‘The Inner Light.’ Then, BAM, Jeri Ryan from Star Trek: Voyager shows up out of nowhere, suddenly turning this series into not just a Next Generation continuation, but an entire Star Trek series continuation. As if that isn’t enough Dana Troi, Commander Riker, and others are now confirmed to be in the show. I may faint.
Let’s also talk about just how filmic this all looks. Star Trek: Discovery feels like television, and that’s OK, but this looks like a high-budget movie. Part of that has to do with Stewart being a big time actor but it also looks like its shot wonderfully.
Star Trek: Picard will premiere on CBS All Access sometime next year, which is not soon enough.
