By Chris Miller, executive producer of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, has revealed that Sony’s own Marvel universe will feature live-action TV shows based on the characters it controls. Without saying too much, Miller told Deadline, “We are developing a handful of live-action shows using Sony’s Marvel characters, of which there are like 900 characters.”
Without confirming what that means (another live-action Spider-Man, maybe?), Miller continued, “We’re figuring out a way to develop the shows so that each are their own unique experience but are also related…We’ve been talking to a lot of potential teammates for trying to do something not like anything else that’s been done on television.”
With Sony not being a part of Disney+, though, where will these new shows end up? “Hopefully we’ll know in the next few months where it’ll be and what the schedule will be,” Miller said, not dismissing the possibility of Netflix. He also stated that it would be a little while before everything came together, so we’re not even sure if this will be ready for 2020 or even 2021.
Sony having part ownership of Spider-Man has, so far, yielded great results. Venom might be a bit of a dud, but it earned a tremendous amount of money at the box-office. Into The Spider-Verse is regarded as the best film adaptation of the character, and Far From Home has now become the most successful Spider-Man film ever released. While I fear a separate TV universe will muddy the waters of the MCU, it does make sense from a financial standpoint.
