By It’s good to see risky films do well. Good Boys is an R-rated comedy starring pre-teens that could have completely whiffed but the strong reviews seem to have brought in the audience as it out performed expectations and pulled in $21 million. Given the fact that the movie cost only $20 million to make (child stars work cheap) and that it got a B+ CinemaScore and a fantastic 89% audience rating on RT this is going to make its money back and then some. Will we have a new trend of children saying a fuck a lot in movies now?
Good Boys is only the third original film to open number one and has made Universal grab that spot three weekend in a row, with Hobbs & Shaw leading that last two weekends. it’s strong box office puts Universal over the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office as well, which is a feat only Disney has pulled off yet this year. All in all, the little comedy done good.
The big action movie did too as Hobbs & Shaw only dropped 44% to $14.1 million, but the rest of the box office was disappointing. The next “new opening” was Angry Birds 2 with $16.2 million over six days, a woeful performance. It only gets worse from there with 47 Meters Down: Uncaged bringing in half its expected box with $9 million. Where’d You Go, Bernadette couldn’t even muster a top ten opening or break $4 million. Once again, if you aren’t making a sequel or a reboot it’s just hard to make money it seems.
