By Relativity is a funny thing. Relative to most action movies, especialy those featuring superheroes, Angel Has Fallen‘s $21.25 million box office looks like nothing. An action film pulling in that much money from Disney would be a total flop, but it’s a big win for Lionsgate and Millenium. The box office means the film landed right around its predecessor’s total and got them their second number one of the year after John Wick 3. The total might not sound big relative to the massive box offices we see now, but it is, especially in late August.
Speaking of massive box offices, Hobbs & Shaw debuted in China this week and landed $102 million. That’s the biggest Chinese August opening in history. The Chinese market is still influenced by star power and franchises in a way the U.S. market isn’t and coupling Fast & Furious with both Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham was clearly a winning combination. Expect the next Hobbs & Shaw film to feature a Chinese actor in a major role of some sort and probably some action in the country itself. As China continues to deliver bigger box offices than the U.S. for massive films we’re just going to see more and more movies attempting to appeal to the marker.
