By Star of ABC’s The Rookie and aspiring Nathan Drake actor Nathan Fillion will be in James Gunn’s forthcoming The Suicide Squad, says Deadline. The role for Fillion, who has been involved in nearly all of Gunn’s films, has yet to be confirmed. It’ll probably be something ridiculous, though.
Previously, Fillion appeared in Gunn’s Slither and Super, with a small voice cameo in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunately for the MCU, his cameo/easter egg appearance as Wonder Man, or rather Wonder Man’s acting persona as Simon Williams, was cut from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. With The Suicide Squad, Fillion will finally fully join Gunn in one of his big blockbuster projects.
Fillion will join new cast members Idris Elba as not-Deadshot, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Flula Borg, and Steve Agee as the voice of King Shark. Interestingly enough, the trades previously reported fellow Gunn alum Michael Rooker as King Shark, but Rooker denied the report on social media. Hard to imagine a Rooker-less Gunn movie.
Returning from the 2016 film are Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, so now we see some semblance of Gunn’s “some kind of suicide squad.” We’ll see if this esteemed franchise can somehow win yet another Academy Award after it releases on August 6, 2021.
