After two weeks atop the domestic box office, it looks like Joker has finally been beaten. It was only a matter of time before the divisive feature was usurped as the number #1 movie in America, but understandably, it lost to a new Disney movie. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil easily topped the box office with a healthy $36 million while Joker came in second with a still respectable $29 million. Currently Joker has taken in nearly $738 million globally, making the goal of it reaching over $1 billion a very realistic possibility.
Zombieland 2: Double Tap also head a healthy opening weekend, netting a nice $26 million and securing its third place standing. It’s easy to see the movie making its full budget back by the time Halloween rolls around, though the same can’t be said for Gemini Man, which took in $8.5 million this week and is shaping up to be a substantial bomb for Paramount. With nothing major releasing this week, it looks like the standing with be pretty solid for the next couple of weeks, though it will be interesting to see how The Lighthouse performs once it receives a wider release this week.
