No one is surprised: Frozen 2 breaks records, makes money

If you had told me when Frozen 2 was announced that it was going to break some box office records and make a lot of money, I would have agreed with you completely because I’m not an idiot. And Frozen 2 did indeed do those things. The movie opened with $127 million domestically, making it the top grossing animated film not to open in summer. Globally the movie made $350 million and given the legs on Disney’s animated musicals there is plenty more to come.

Everything else was pretty much crowded out, though, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood hit expectations with $13.5 million. Given it has Tom Hanks in it and Mr. Rogers is a national treasure I think we’ll get a sleeper hit out of it unless people get upset with the slight bait-and-switch of the movie.

1. Frozen 2 – $127,000,000
2. Ford v. Ferrari – $16,000,000
3. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood -$13,500,000
4. 21 Bridges – $9,300,000
5. Midway – $4,700,000
6. Playing With Fire – $4,615,000
7. The Good Liar – $3,375,000
8. Charlie’s Angels – $3,175,000
9. Last Christmas – $3,040,000
10. Joker – $2,820,000
