By Ubisoft is doing everything in its power to not create sequels for its popular franchises (as well as cover up its history of misogyny and employee abuse). After announcing plans for an anime Splinter Cell series with Netflix, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the cult favorite 2003 game Beyond Good & Evil is up next for a series adaptation.
Helming the project is Rob Letterman, the director behind last year’s successful Pokémon Detective Pikachu. Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin from Ubisoft’s film division will be producing the show, which is said to be a live-action/animated hybrid project -possibly in the vein of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?-. There are no details on whether or not this show will be a recap of the first game or some kind of prequel, though it’s likely being timed to tie-in with the never materializing Beyond Good & Evil 2.
If Ubisoft wasn’t such a terrible company, I’d be more excited. Projects like this are a great way to expand the audience for a brand beyond a select few, but recent news surrounding the french publisher/developer has been anything but fun. With many executives stepping down after accusations of sexual misconduct and the company’s CEO continuously proving to be negligently oblivious, I’m not sure we should be celebrating these announcements.
Also, the company could just make new entries in these series, but that’s asking too much.
