By Fans of sci-fi series Altered Carbon will be saddened to learn that Netflix has pulled the plug on the show after two seasons. A new report from Variety has confirmed the news and alluded that the streaming juggernaut canned the series due to low viewership. This follows the cancelation of shows The Society and I’m Not Okay With This, which had both received second season orders and were discontinued following “budgetary issues surrounding increased health and safety costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The show, based on the novel by author Richard K. Morgan, followed the adventures of an interstellar warrior named Takeshi Kovacs that changed bodies in each season. Both Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie portrayed the character in season one and season two respectively. There’s no word on who may have played Takeshi in a potential season three, but the show won’t be given the chance to explore different options.
Netflix has something of a turbulent history with its original shows. While most tend to explode on release and rack in millions of views, viewership tends to fall off rather quickly as watchers scramble onto the next big thing. Certain IPs stick around (such as Orange is the New Black and GLOW), but most get canceled after three seasons. That Altered Carbon made it to two is great, but I suppose all good things must come to an end.
