It’s been a long time coming for the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer, with a prolonged release and a bumpy road, but the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World finally have their time in the ring.
Following Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobbie Brown, and Rebecca Hall, directed by Adam Wingard (Death Note and You’re Next). Accompanied by the hype-man soundtrack that I didn’t know such a bout needed (?), the new trailer looks to position Kong as “our boy,” with agents of attempted-monster management Monarch looking to return the colossal ape to his home, or otherwise explore his peculiar upbringing. That is, before a pouty Godzilla shows up and it’s a regular slugfest. Whoever wins, we lose?
The premiere of the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer comes after nearly a year of delayed releases brought on by the meteoric shake-up the pandemic has dealt the film industry; originally set for a March, then summer, then May 2021 release, the film will finally release to theaters and HBO Max March 26, 2021. The dual release to theaters and streaming comes with the strategy pushing Warner Bros.’ entire 2021 slate of films to the simultaneous release model, a move that might have some serious legal consequences between the studio and Godzilla vs. Kong production company Legendary Entertainment.
In any event, the atomic breath and monkeying around will finally hit the eager eyeballs of kaiju freaks in some capacity come this March, with the trailer finally giving us a proper glimpse at the bag of tricks Godzilla vs. Kong has to bring. Monsters punching each other? Sure, why the heck not. Meanwhile, take a look at the latest poster, and mark your calendars for mayhem March 26, 2021.
