By Tweeted out less than an hour ago (at the time of writing), Idris Elba has confirmed that he will be portraying Knuckles the Echidna in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film. Many weren’t quite sure how to take the Tweet, but it was then confirmed by games industry pundit Geoff Keighley on Twitter. Well, all right then.

We had already known a sequel was happening to the surprise hit original and that Knuckles would be featured, but this casting is pretty wild. I’ve been a big fan of Elba’s since the Luther days and I’m happy to see him cast in more films. I’m not sure I would have ever pegged him as Knuckles, but then it does make sense. Knuckles has always been tough as nails and Elba is anything but a pushover.
Now we just need confirmation that April 8, 2022, release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 won’t be getting delayed and everything will be set. I wasn’t as big on the first movie as some others, but it was a surprisingly decent attempt at adapting a video game to a feature film. We’ve come a long way from the days of shoddy video games (mostly), so if Sonic 2 can keep the momentum going, I’m game.
