Sitting at eight mainline films (and two conclusory entries to be released at a later date), a spin-off feature, short films, an animated series, a video game… and probably some action figures, somewhere, the Fast & Furious franchise has become synonymous with… cinema. Love it or hate it, the films are a box office presence rivaled by few other tentpoles, and the ‘ol street-racers are still at it with a sequel to last year’s Hobbs & Shaw confirmed to be in development.
Dwayne Johnson, the Hobbs half of the Fast spin-off film, confirmed in an Instagram Q&A that the a sequel was indeed happening. “We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I’m pretty excited about it…Just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go.” The Rock speaks and we listen.
Given the current state of the world, let alone the film industry, naturally there are chips yet to fall in place for Hobbs & Shaw 2‘s production. With F9 pushed back to the untitled-tenth entry’s April 2, 2021 release date, the trajectory of the franchise isn’t crystal-clear at the moment.
The first film has several threads to pick up, whether it’s the work relationship/bromance between our titular heroes–including Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, any number of escapades initiated by the criminal Shaw family, or maybe just Ryan Reynolds and Rob Delaney’s affable CIA agents. Where this road goes, nobody knows. With the level of uncertainty in Hollywood productions at the moment, we likely have years to ponder before Hobbs & Shaw 2 hits screens.
