Knives Out was one of the best movies of 2019. It was one of Flixist’s Best Reviewed Movies of 2019, it made several of our writer’s Top 5 lists, and Johnson even took home our pick for Best Director in the 2019 Golden Cages. Those are some pretty high accolades if I do say so. Oh, it was also nominated for a BAFTA, Golden Globes, and even an Oscar. This movie could’ve been a one-shot and it would’ve been great, but I don’t think anyone will complain about the fact that Knives Out is officially getting a sequel.
The big news that Rian Johnson has been talking about was finally confirmed by Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer saying that the sequel has officially been given the green light and production will commence soon. This is an exciting announcment since the murder mystery film was a breath of fresh air and welcome addition to the waning genre. Audiences showed up to the tune of close to a $300 million box office off a $40 million budget for Knives Out and another film starring Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc could yield just as nice a profit for the studio.
This move was an easy choice for the studio and, with Johnson likely returning to write and direct, the journey of Benoit Blanc’s cases could be just as enjoyable as the first time around. Knives Out 2: Judgement Day could hold the possibility of a franchise as well. There’s no official word on when production will start for 2 Knives 2 Furious or when they are aiming to release Knives Out 2: Dead by Dawn, but looking at the clues a 2022 release date might be a possibility.
