Aardman Animations, the creators of the classic stop-motion shorts of Wallace and Gromit, have issued a statement that they will change a scene in their upcoming The Pirates! Band of Misfits because it upset leprosy charities including the Lepra Health In Action and the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP).
The scene in question was featured in the trailer for Pirates! and shows the captain of the pirate crew – voiced by Hugh Grant – talking to a person on “a leper boat” and then the guy’s arm falls off. Aardman Animations’ statement said, “After reviewing the matter, we decided to change the scene out of respect and sensitivity for those who suffer from leprosy. The last thing anyone intended was to offend anyone and it is clear to us that the right way to proceed is to honor the efforts made by organizations like ILEP to educate the public about this disease.” Fair enough.
