This might come as a surprise to anyone who glances at box office but it is not Disney who has the most number one openings of the year. No, as of this weekend, with Abominable opening at number one with $20.85 million, Universal now has seven number one openings making them the studio with the most number ones on the year. Now, Disney still has made more money in total by a long shot but it’s interesting it played out like that.
Universal also nabbed the number two spot (kind of) as they distributed Focus Feature’s Downtown Abbey and that film carried over with strong legs from last week’s release. The movie landed $14.5 million, which makes it one of Focus Feature’s highest grossing films ever. The bigger story, however, might be the fact that both Hustlers and It: Chapter 2 only dipped 32 percent, showing some really impressive legs on both films — or some bad competition. Ad Astra seems to be dropping fast despite the critical reception. Whatever reason, both films seem to have a long shelf life.
