“Ya havin’ a good time?” “…Yes.” We’ll see how things pan out after the new trailer for Benny and Josh Safdie’s new crime drama Uncut Gems, with Adam Sandler in the role of a New York jeweler who would appear to be in over his head. A24 will distribute.
Adam Sandler plays Howard Ratner, in a role that would look to join his truly terrific performances like his greatest in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love, or even his role in the 2017 Noah Baumbach film The Meyerowitz Stories. When he gets in the zone, Sandler can dial the funny-man persona down and distill that humor to a raw, sometimes painful realness. The Safdies are just the ones to tap into that potential. If there’s something they know, it’s humanity amidst the hustle of New York City. Look no further than 2017’s Robert Pattinson vehicle Good Time, or their drug drama Heaven Knows What. Very gritty, very down-to-Earth, very New York.
Kevin Garnett, Idina Menzel, and Lakeith Stanfield will also star in Uncut Gems when it releases December 13 this year.
