With The Pee-Wee Herman Show successful at Broadway, and an upcoming road trip movie with Judd Apatow attached to produce, things are looking up for Reubens since his arrest in 2002. One of the more intriguing projects he was slated to work on was a darker Pee-Wee Herman movie. But in a recent interview during the Television Critics Association press tour, Reuben said “The dark Pee-Wee movie won’t be happening until things get a little darker.†I, um…what?
Reubens went on to talk about the Apatow movie and how it’ll differ between 1985’s Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. “That’s what Judd keeps asking us! How’s it going to be different?!†As a long time Pee-Wee fan, I’m glad to see that Reubens and Apatow are striving to do something to set this new movie apart from Tim Burton’s classic. It’s a shame we won’t see that darker Pee-Wee flick though. As I recall, the original Pee-Wee stage show was really dark, and really funny.
