It’d be incredibly risky to take a dark tone with a big superhero franchise, but that might be the perfect kick in the pants for The Amazing Spider-Man. And what better character to do it than Venom? After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to make a big splash domestically, Sony has had to renege on their plans for yearly films (bumping The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to 2018) and is trying everything from a villain starring spin-off to a female-led one. But at least one of them is going to stand out.
Talking with MTV, Kurtzman dished on what to expect from a Venom movie:
Well, Venom is sort of the flip side in that there are certain lines that Spider-Man won’t cross because he’s Peter Parker and Peter Parker will only do certain things and Venom is an entirely different character. Venom, in a weird way, is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He’s a much darker character. I wouldn’t even really say more complicated because I think they’re both very complicated characters, but I think the attraction for me to Venom is the idea that you can do things that you can’t do with Spider-Man.
Whether or not the final film will be darker, it’ll at least be unique within the Clone Saga the Spider-Man films have caught themselves in. And don’t say Sony should just give the rights back to Marvel. We’re so far in, I don’t want to start back over again.
