Alexander Payne may direct Wilson

0

Alexander Payne has certainly made a name for himself in the genre of Really Depressing movies. See About Schmidt, the mildly more optimistic, Sideways, and the concluding vignette of the fabulous Paris Je T’aime (it made me cry, hard). Each have their redeeming moments, but drag you through depths of sadness before you ever see the light. Deadline reports that Payne may now take the helm of Fox’s recently optioned Wilson adaptation, based on the graphic novel by Dan Clowes (Ghost World).

Wilson is an unemployed, passive aggressive type who passes off misery like a contagion. Sounds fun! The role seems destined for Paul Giamatti or Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who’ve got the middle-aged, depressive persona down to a T. However, after seeing John Krasinski all nerded out for Away We Go, for some reason, I feel like he would be a good, less-worn fit.
