Well here’s a bit of a head scratcher. After a lengthy gestation (haha), the prequel to Alien that secured actress Noomi Rapace and artist H.R. Geiger is no longer part of the Alien franchise. Ridley Scott has announced today that while his movie is still on, the whole Alien thing has been done away with. Rebooting and sequelizing has become passé according to co-writer and LOST luminary Damon Lindelof. His collaboration with Scott has bared such fruit as has never been tasted by the sound of things.
Now titled Prometheus, the film will exist in a fresh universe of characters and (presumably) space monsters recognizably derived “from the DNA of Alien†without actually being associated with the alien, Ripley, nor their scandalous offspring. So long as Geiger or Neville Page (Lindelof’s Cloverfield monster designing pal) handles the creature work, I’m fine with the rebranding. Call it Alien or don’t, just shut up and give me the first Ridley Scott science fiction since Blade Runner.
