Box office round up

Jordan Peele's Us absolutely destroyed the Box Office in every way possible this weekend, pulling in $70.25 million. That's mind-blowlingly better than expectations had it at and drove a hefty $18,778 average per theater. The box office is just insane considering the fact that Us is an R-rated, live-action, original horror film. In fact, when you look at those films nothing even comes close to touching Us, with A Quiet Place at $50.2 million the closest competitor. The only other live-action, original film to ever beat out Us was Avatar, way back in 2009 (ignoring inflation) and that didn't have an R hampering its box office.

Obviously, word of mouth is going to count a lot for how well Us continues to perform since its rating and genre restrict its audience a bit. That's how Get Out turned into a truly massive hit, and given the positive reception to the movie from critics and audiences, I think we'll see the same thing here, possibly better, considering the head start the movie has given this huge opening.

Anyway, Peele is now a bonafide hit-maker and it's going to be fun to see what he does with his increasing power in Hollywood. I'd love to see him branch out a bit from horror. I think he'd make a fantastic thriller and, honestly, wouldn't mind another comedy at some point.
