I’ve been growing rather tired of the superhero genre over the past few years. It’s not that I don’t like them but I’m just getting tired of the same stories over and over with different characters thrown in. Sure there are some bright spots like the Spider-Man movies and the movie where Thanos did absolutely nothing wrong. Still, it can’t be denied that I’m coming down with the fatigue.
That’s why The Boys on Amazon was such a refreshing take on the genre. I’ve long loved Garth Ennis’ absolute disdain for superheroes but even being a long fan of his writing didn’t prepare me for how much I was going to love the first season of his nihilistic anti-superhero story. My girlfriend and I blew through the season in a course of a week which included a move and no internet at our home. Granted it was only eight episodes but for me that’s a lot in a little time. At the end we were left wanting and yearning for more. Thankfully it looks like we aren’t going to have to wait long.
While no hard date has been dropped for the season, the amount of “stuff” in the trailer makes me think that it’s either wrapped production or is in the final stages, so hopefully that ambiguous 2020 turns into early 2020.
