Amazon inks Jordan Peele for Bobbitt Docuseries

One night in 1993 Lorena Bobbitt’s husband came home, raped her, then went to sleep. In the ultimate act of defiant revenge, Lorena grabbed a knife and–while he was still asleep–cut off his manhood. As if that wasn’t enough, she got in her car, drove away, and threw the appendage out the window into a field. Hell hath no fury.

It’s a strange story that seems more likely to take place in a grotesque horror film, but this truly happened. In the ensuing trial, details of their volatile relationship came to light, but in the end John Wayne Bobbitt was acquitted while Lorena was found not guilty on claims of insanity.

Still cooling off from his hot Oscar season, Get Out director Jordan Peele has signed on to executive produce Bobbitt, a documentary series for Amazon. The doc is expected to focus more on Lorena’s story and shed new light on her tale of the events. Peele had this to say:

When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle. With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”

The series is slated for four episodes to be directed by Joshua Rofé.
