There’s something about the “people who have absolutely no business committing a crime try to commit it anyway” flavor of dark comedy that makes it one I can never get enough of, and with how stellar last year’s I, Tonya was, I’m certainly hankering for more.
American Animals looks like it’s going to fill that hole in my stomach. With all of its “This isn’t based on a true story. It actually happened” fluff aside, the style and tone look like they’ll strike for something that should be at turns thrilling and fun to watch.
The story covers four college friends (Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner, and Jared Abrahamson) who are sick of hanging around waiting to be someone special and instead attempt to steal a very expensive book. What appears to be a simple job will undoubtedly meet waves of complication as the heist unfolds.
American Animals will hit select theaters on June 1.
