Andy Serkis among trio of directors in the running for Venom 2

'We are Venom'

According to a new report from Variety, a trio of directors are being considered for the upcoming Venom sequel. As some unnamed sources have told the publication, Andry Serkis, Travis Knight (Bumblebee), and Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) are in the running to helm the follow-up to Sony's surprise smash hit Spider-Man spin-off. Apparently, it's all still in the "meetings" phase as no particular director has been favored.

As for why Venom's director Ruben Fleischer won't be returning, it's because of being tied up in post-production on Zombieland: Double Tap. While that film is set to release in October, Sony is aiming to begin shooting Venom 2 in the fall. Fleischer likely won't be able to provide any work, apart from possibly some input on a replacement director.

Say what you will about the quality of Venom, but it was a box-office smash. Grossing nearly $900 million in overall take, it seems people are just dying to see Spidey's most recognizable and well-loved nemesis get the attention he deserves. News of a sequel isn't new (or unexpected), but Sony appears to be fast-tracking production of it to strike while the iron's hot. Considering Marvel's latest Spider-Man film, Far From Home, just recently crossed $1 billion at the global box-office, I don't blame them.
