As part of its press tour today, Hulu announced a slate of new programming coming to the streaming service in the near future. There’s a lot of original shows that sound interesting, but I’m more intrigued by Animaniacs. A fairly groundbreaking show in my youth, the previously announced two-season order will begin debuting on November 20, 2020.
Coming roughly 22 years after its original final episode, the long-awaited revival will premiere with a 13 episode season that reunites Yakko, Wakko, and Dot with a bunch of their old friends. Yes, that includes Pinky & the Brain, who will feature in each of the season’s episodes (they’re likely still trying to take over the world).
This new vision of an old-classic will see Steven Spielberg returning as executive producer along with Sam Register (president of Warner Bros. Animation and Blue Ribbon Content), Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey (co-presidents of Amblin TV), and Wellesley Wild serving as executive producers. These names won’t be immediately familiar as only Spielberg was involved with the original run of the show.
While not currently talking about what the second season will contain, Hulu did mention that it will debut sometime in 2021. Considering that 90s nostalgia is in right now, there’s a solid chance that Animaniacs will continue to prosper for an entirely new generation of kids. If nothing else, cynical adults that can finally understand the humor will be happy.
