Animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch announced for Disney+

In the wake of the hotly-anticipated and much-demanded Clone Wars finale, Lucasfilm and Disney are turning their sights to new frontiers for their animated Star Wars ambitions, announcing The Bad Batch, an all-new animated series set to premiere on Disney+ in 2021.

Following their debut in the final episodes of The Clone Wars, the titular Bad Batch will star in the new series, said to take place in the “immediate aftermath of the Clone War.” The Bad Batch, specialized Clone Troopers, “will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose.” Old guns without an army to fight for sounds like a worthwhile means of continuing the success of The Clone Wars while shifting the style, potentially, and narrowing in on a select cast of characters.

Clone Wars creator and all-around Star Wars expert Dave Filoni will executive produce, alongside Brad Rau and Jennifer Corbett, veterans of Star Wars: Rebels and Resistance. Corbett will serve as head writer, with Rau taking up the mantle of supervising director.

Disney+ continues to accrue a slate of gestating Star Wars projects. At this point, the count includes an Obi-Wan Kenobi series, one spinning off Rogue One‘s Cassian Andor, and a series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland.

As for Bad Batch, a 2021 window is all we have in the way of release. Stay tuned for more updates.
