Lionsgate has announced that the Janelle Monáe-led horror film Antebellum will premiere on VOD services starting this September, following delays due to the pandemic.
Originally set for a late-April release, the reality-warping mystery was delayed to August 21st following the upheaval of cinemas in the wake of the pandemic. With the state of American theaters still a major unknown, Lionsgate has revealed plans to release Antebellum to VOD services beginning September 18th.
The news follows days after Disney revealed plans to release Mulan on Disney+ for an additional fee, after being scheduled for a release the same day as Antebellum on August 21st. Mulan, alongside Tenet from Warner Bros, was seen as one of the major benchmarks by which the status of American theaters were to be judged under the ongoing pandemic. Its shift to the home streaming of Disney+ will no doubt influence other, smaller titles to reassess their plans in the coming weeks.
Directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, Antebellum stars Monáe as a successful author who finds herself whisked away to the hellish days of the Underground Railroad in the American South.
