Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, I have to say that little piques my hometown nostalgia more than a boy dressed head-to-toe in camouflage killing animals and taking them home to his monster of a dad. This trailer for Antlers, in that case, is like a thin slice of soupie for my soul.
It also helps that Antlers looks very hella good. There’s a great use of darkness, a tactile griminess to this young boy’s world. The fact that the kid already has that emaciated wide-eyed look of a serial killer is just a bonus. Oh, it also has a monster–which the boy refers to as “Daddy.” That means this movie is going to be a hundred percent about daddy issues. I love horror movies about daddy issues.
From director Scott Cooper and producer Guillermo del Toro, Antlers looks like one very darksome and morbid fable. We’ll all find out for ourselves when it guts theaters sometime in 2020.
