Were you afraid that Las Vegas was already teeming with masses of brain-altered, shuffling bodies craving their next gulp of gambling adrenaline or swing at the lobster bar? Just me? Well, prepare to be more afraid, just me, because the new teaser for Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead pits its mercenary “heroes” against a Sin City crowded with literal zombies. The flesh-eating kind!
When the city becomes a ground zero for brain-gobbling undead, Las Vegas is quickly and, seemingly, efficiently (we could learn a thing or two!) quarantined from the world, the virus contained in what is now left as a wasteland city. A wasteland full of casinos. Casinos full of money. Hired by a gambling mogul to retrieve his dough from a fortified safe, a crew of mercenaries including the ever-charming Dave Bautista saddle up for an unconventional heist, of sorts. Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Raúl Castillo, Michael Cassidy, and Garret Dillahunt also star in Zack Snyder’s latest, non-superheroic feature.
The teaser… honestly, looks like a lot of fun. I guess it’s been long enough that zombie fever has died down and I’m up for a good splat-fest with some flashy, Snyder-signature visuals. The trailer does its job reminding you that Snyder did in fact direct the Dawn of the Dead remake from 2004, so he’s no stranger to bloody hordes of ghouls.
With a script from the John Wick and Obi-Wan Kenobi writers, as well as Snyder’s input, hopefully Army of the Dead features just enough wit and pacing to keep us interested in all the bloodletting. Time will tell, when Army of the Dead hits Netflix May 21, 2021.
