The CW’s Arrowverse shows were the best thing you could watch based on DC Comics for a very long time. Hell, for a while there they were the best comic book TV you could watch period. And it all started with Arrow, which is now coming to an end with a final 8-episode season.
It seems like the cancellation has more to do with the show running out of steam rather than ratings as the producers released the below statement explaining what a hard decision it was. This makes sense, especially considering the sweet Netflix money that these CW shows pull in.
“This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind. We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.”
I actually watch all the Arrowverse shows in a giant binge when the new seasons land on Netflix and I kind of have to agree that Arrow was losing some steam, though I’m still two seasons behind at the moment. Some seasons were great recently, but overall you could tell they were beginning to wear a little thin. And it’s not like this is the end of the Arrowverse as Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Black Lightning (it counts!) are all still going on. Not to mention the new Batwoman show that’s incoming.
What will be very interesting to see is if Stephen Amell’s Arrow character will still show up for guest appearances in other shows in the universe he started. He’s been a key part of Flash and the crossover episodes will seem weird without him. Of course, this will all depend on how this final season ends. If Oliver Queen dies or quits being the Green Arrow it will explain his absence, but still. I guess everything comes to an end… except Supernatural, which is getting a 15th season.
If you’d like to feel a little sad about this here’s a heartfelt Tweet about it from Amell, who became a massive star thanks to the show… well, at least his abs did.
Playing Oliver Queen has been the greatest professional experience of my life… but you can’t be a vigilante forever.
Arrow will return for a final run of 10 episodes this Fall.
There’s so much to say… for now I just want to say thank you.
