A fan favorite gets a sequel, with news that both John Boyega and director Joe Cornish will return for a follow-up to 2011’s Attack the Block, the midnight movie hit that saw a group of English street kids kick back when extraterrestrials come knocking.
Plot details for the sequel are a mystery, but Boyega commented on the reveal, calling his character Moses one of his “favourite characters to play.” Cornish, the original’s writer as well as director, chimed in as well, saying he’s “thrilled we’re officially announcing our return to the world of Attack The Block on the tenth anniversary of the film’s release,” promising “audiences an even bigger slice of inner-city alien action.” Cornish and Boyega will also produce the sequel, with Nira Park and James Wilson.
Attack the Block was such a smash for Boyega and company’s South London spunk, following him and his band of bad lads on the eve of an apparent alien invasion. A ton of fun, bolstered by great creatures and Cornish’s tight direction, Attack the Block has stood the test of time beyond mere midnight fad; a sequel with Boyega in tow is proof enough that the Star Wars star has a strong affection for his original alien adventure.
Boyega recently flexed his range with an appearance in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology of films. Whether or not Boyega will return for more galactic shenanigans remains to be seen, though it must be liberating to move past Star Wars and work on new projects, with the cred the House of the Mouse has garnered him.
