The winners of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts categories have been announced, and surprisingly the fact that Alice in Wonderland won two awards wasn’t the most shocking factoid face slap of the night. Was it that a British history film won best movie of the year? Nope. That Geoffrey Rush received a prestigious award for giving simply a “good” performance? Nah. How about that the local and controversial Banksy documentary got snubbed by bitter ballots? Sadly predictable.
For me the most confusing outcome is that Helena Bonham Carter had almost no role in The King’s Speech, yet still won best supporting actress of the year anyways. It’s a good thing they slighted The Fighter by not including Melissa Leo as a nominee, because Queen Elizabeth could turn into Marla Singer and she still wouldn’t stand a chance. Carter should be just as ashamed to show her face on stage as the lame looking BAFTA face mask prize she’ll win.
