By Hold your horses, internet speculators. The Wrap is reporting that, should street artist Banksy win an Academy Award as director of Exit Through the Gift Shop, in all likelihood he will not be accepting the award in person. Citing numerous logistical problems regarding the ever-shrouded figure, the Academy has decided that it would be too difficult to physically award Banksy said Oscar without compromising his identity. Their solution? Have the producer accept on Banksy’s behalf.
For many this doesn’t come as a surprise, especially considering how much of a premium Banksy has placed on anonymity up until this point. More intriguing, however, is the fact that Banksy actually signed the form that states, should he win, that he will not sell or transfer ownership of the Oscar. Why is that interesting? Because Banksy, who is not too fond of rules himself, seems to be playing by the Academy’s. For such an iconoclast, the whole process seems a bit too cut and dry.
One would think that Banksy might reject the entire notion of the Oscars as being at odds with his overall outlook on the world. With rumors circulating that even Exit itself might  be a hoax, it seems…
