Never say never when it comes to Hollywood casting. In a new report from Vanity Fair, it has been confirmed that Ben Affleck will be donning the cape and cowl one more time for Andrés Muschietti’s The Flash. Famously dumped from the DCEU after the “failure” of Batman V Superman – Dawn of Justice and The Justice League, Affleck being given another chance is one of the better stories of movies in 2020.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Muschietti said, “His [Affleck’s] Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong which is his masculinity – because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline – but he’s also very vulnerable. He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”
Muschietti continued, “He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before.” Lest you think the film is more about the caped crusader, Muschietti reassured that The Flash is very much a film about Barry Miller. Batman is simply there as emotional support.
In another great move, the director also confirmed that Michael Keaton will be returning as Batman in the very same film. A rumor that went around earlier this year, it seems that The Flash is very much a multi-verse story. Those that have a favorite iteration of Gotham’s protector won’t have to worry about missing out: they’re both here!
So, I just went from having zero interest in The Flash to suddenly on board with it. I’m not going to expect too much, but this is shaping up to be quite the spectacle for DC’s film division.
