Despite history’s best efforts to bury the almighty Blade Runner, it seems Deckard and his gang of replicants just won’t fade away. Deadline has learned that a brand new TV series titled Blade Runner 2099 is currently being developed by Amazon Studios. Billed as a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, this 50-year-later continuation will actually see OG director Ridley Scott executive producing alongside Silka Luisa, known for her work as showrunner of Shining Girls.
Apart from Luisa handling head writing duties, Amazon Studios is currently fast-tracking scripts to get production started ASAP. Staffing for writers is also occurring and Scott has even shown interest in directing if the series gets picked up.
What’s interesting to note is that this actually won’t be the first TV series set in the Blade Runner universe. Late last year, Adult Swim debuted Blade Runner: Black Lotus on its network to a decent reception. Something of an interquel between the original and 2049, Black Lotus was set in the year 2032 and was centered on a female replicant played by Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist, The Matrix Resurrections). It just recently debuted its finale, in fact.
For now, it’s assumed that Blade Runner 2099 will be an Amazon Prime exclusive should it go into full production. For his part, Scott claimed last November that he already wrote the pilot and has a bible constructed to help guide crew members. It seems whether we want more Blade Runner or not, it will eventually happen.
