Bob Marley: One Love stirs up a number one finish for Valentine’s Day weekend

0

With no major sporting event going on this weekend, regular box office performance returned to cineplexs across the nation. While the winners of this weekend haven’t been rated all too well, at least Bob Marley: One Love is looking to be a financial success.

Made on a budget of $70 million, Bob Marley: One Love took in $27.7 million for its weekend debut. Having opened earlier in the week on Valentine’s Day, the film’s current domestic haul is estimated at around $51 million. Factoring in international shows, the movie has crossed $80 million and is looking to continue amassing money for the next few weeks.

The same cannot be said for Madame Web, yet another non-MCU Spider-Man film from Sony. While Sony’s latest is relatively modest when it comes to comic book budgets, being made for $80 million, its debut weekend of $15 million isn’t inspiring confidence. International gross puts the film at nearly $50 million for its six-day total, but incredibly dour word-of-mouth may have likely capped off any momentum this movie could have earned.

That follows into the number three spot for Argylle. While I’m surprised this movie has managed to finish relatively high in the charts for three weeks without turning a profit, another $4.7 million is not going to shift the tide. I would be sincerely surprised if, by the time this film’s run is over, it crosses $100 million.

Everything else in the top 10 is just stuff from previous weeks (go figure). These numbers look ridiculously similar to last week mostly because the only two major releases in February so far were Bob Marley: One Love and Madame Web. People want new things!

Here are the top 10 films for the weekend of February 16-18, 2024. All totals listed are domestic:

  1. Bob Marley: One Love – $27.7 million
  2. Madame Web – $15.1 million
  3. Argylle – $4.7 million
  4. Migration – $3.7 million
  5. The Chosen: Season Four Episodes 4-6 – $3.44 million
  6. Wonka – $3.4 million
  7. The Beekeeper – $3.2 million
  8. Anyone But You – $2.4 million
  9. Lisa Frankenstein – $2 million
  10. Land of Bad – $1.8 million
