Bond producers: Idris Elba would be great as 007

Idris Elba is truly one of Britain’s greatest treasures. Between his appearances in The Wire, Pacific Rim and Luther (to name a few), his sheer perfection as an actor and a human being is basically a given, so it’s no surprise that there’s been a lot of buzz – official and unofficial – about the possibility of the actor playing superspy James Bond when current 007 Daniel Craig inevitably vacates the role. Now, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have weighed in.

“I think he’d make a great Bond,” Wilson told IGN when asked during a Spectre set visit. But that doesn’t mean he’ll get the opportunity anytime soon.

“You know, Daniel Craig is Bond, and I don’t want to think about what happens when he goes,” Broccoli said. “But I’m a huge fan of Idris — we all are. He’s a great actor, and he could do anything. So ask me when we’re looking for a new Bond — which hopefully won’t be for a long time.”

After Spectre, Craig is only signed on to do one more Bond film (which will happen to be number 25), but Broccoli calls his contract “open-ended,” and Wilson said that “We want him for as long as he wants.” So it will be at least several years, if not more, before the question of whether Elba could play 007 is anything more than pure speculation and wishful thinking.

In the meantime, we’re utterly stoked for this year’s Spectre, due in theaters Nov. 6. Seriously, did you guys see that trailer? Surely, this movie is too good for this fallen world.
