With no prior build-up or anticipation, Borat 2 is practically right around the corner. Deadline has revealed that Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan, aka Borat 2, will be premiering on Amazon Prime on October 23, 2020. The film was rushed to completion right as the COVID restrictions for filming were lifted in early June 2020. Actor Sacha Baron Cohen has seemingly upped the ante this time, with the report stating he had to wear bulletproof vests during some scenes out of safety.
Why Amazon picked up the film is anyone’s guess, but the release date is no happy accident. It seems Cohen and crew want the film to premiere ahead of the presidential election in early November. Borat was always something of a political satire, but I’m not sure what the plot of this film could do to sway public opinion.
We do at least have some idea of the bits this second outing will include. Earlier in the month, clips of Borat at a McDonalds surfaced and practically confirmed the film before any official word. In July, former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani had the police called on Borat during an interview. In late June, Borat was seen at a gun rally in Olympia, Washington inciting a crowd to sing racist lyrics. This is bound to be something ridiculous, at the very least.
Truth be told, I’m not sure how I feel about Borat 2. Back in 2006, I thought the original was wild, bold, and incredibly brave for adopting the style made famous by Jackass. As I’ve grown older, I can better see the damage that Cohen’s stunts caused to otherwise innocent people. There’s certainly the quality of putting the lens to society, but maybe 2020 isn’t the time for Borat.
