It’s been quite some time since we last heard about the Borderlands film. Last May, it was not only revealed that director Eli Roth would be helming the adaptation, but that actress Cate Blanchett had been cast in the role of Lilith. Now, per a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, production on the film is set to begin shortly in Hungary.
In an interview about the Hungarian film production boom that is currently happening, Alan Goodman of MidAtlantic Films mentioned that Borderlands was one of the projects that had been cleared for filming in the country this year. “We’ve opened up space for a Lionsgate film, Borderlands [starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart], we’re doing season three of Jack Ryan for Paramount TV, and we’re doing a Marvel project, which, for the usual security reasons, I can’t talk about,” Goodman notes.
It’s truly strange to reveal the production of one film within an interview about a completely different subject, but that’s good news for fans of the franchise. Considering the troubled history of this film (which was initially announced in 2015 as potentially happening), it seems that Lionsgate Films is actually serious this time. Now we can only hope that production goes smoothly and that everyone involved stays safe.
