It looks like audiences did the right thing and supported the truly awesome film this weekend. While I’ll always be sad I missed out on Vampire Academy (and I’m sure it’ll be a big hit on home video like Mean Girls), I’m glad I chose The LEGO Movie. Completely defying all expectations, it was great. Also it made over 61 million dollars last weekend.
Coming in second with 22 million is the monumentally disappointing The Monuments Men (should’ve known something was up when the clips they circulated through talk show interviews had been remarkably flaccid), and of course it all knocks Ride Along to third place with under ten million. January is truly over, folks. Time for the good movies to kick in again. Next week the RoboCop reboot releases, but even with the several day head start, I’m sure LEGO Movie is going to take the top spot again.
Hit the jump for the box office performances for the Feb 7-9 weekend.
