As expected, Guardians of the Galaxy made a ton of money its opening weekend despite one theater showing Rise of the Guardians instead, and no one really knowing what it was to begin with. In typical Marvel fashion, Guardians blew every other movie out of the water with $94 million, breaking all sorts of August records.
Rounding out the top three are Lucy with a distant $18 million, and the James Brown biopic Get On Up with $14 million. Next weekend is going to be particularly interesting. I expect Guardians to stay on top, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has an equally large fandom. It’s going to be a toss up.
Hit the jump for the box office numbers for the August 1-3 weekend.
