Box Office Numbers: Last weekend of 2013 y’all

With five or so new movies releasing to theaters on Christmas Day, I had no idea what film would reign supreme. I figured with all of that competition The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug wouldn’t snag the top spot again, but I was wrong. Even with competition, Hobbit Deuces still raked in $29 million. But the biggest surprise is what came in second.

Word of mouth is a strong tool, folks. Families took advantage of the holiday weekend and saw Disney’s Frozen so much it nearly won the whole weekend (as it reigned supreme Friday and Saturday) before losing by a mere million bones. In its FIFTH week out, Frozen still caused some damage. As for the new releases, The Wolf of Wall Street sits in fifth place (which is good for the kind of movie it is), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty sits in seventh (which isn’t surprising, but isn’t good either), 47 Ronin exists, and Grudge Match sadly couldn’t uppercut itself into the top ten.

You’ll find the box office performances for the Dec 27-29 weekend after the jump. Have a happy and safe New Year!
