This week’s big new releases, The Thing and Footloose, failed to unseat Real Steel from the top spot. Is it because moviegoing audiences are finally deciding to embrace new IPs over old franchises, remakes, and prequels? Nah, it’s probably because it’s the last “summer-y” movie that’s family friendly up against an R-rated horror movie and a remake absolutely no one was asking for. The week’s other “big” release, The Big Year, looks to be DOA, debuting at the ninth spot on the board.
