The Wolverine took the top slot at the box office with $55 million, which is actually $30 million less than its stinkburger predecessor X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While $55 million is short of initial projections, The Wolverine‘s total worldwide opening, which includes the domestic gross, was estimated at $141 million. (Those expecting the Frank Miller/Chris Claremont mini-series will be disappointed. The movie takes the character names and then goes in its own direction with the plot, relationships, and motivations, but it’s pretty solid for what it is as long as you don’t mind clunky dream sequences or silly third-act reveals. Also, if you’re a fan of bad dubbing, you’ll really enjoy Svetlana Khodchenkova’s performance.)
The big surprise this week is Fruitvale Station, which is based on the real-life death of Oscar Grant at the hands of the Oakland PD. The film earned a lot of buzz at Sundance, and I sense that interest in the film has increased since the Trayvon Martin ruling. Last week Fruitvale Station expanded from its initial limited release and showed up at #10, an impressive feat for a film that’s only at 1,064 theaters nationwide. (On average, Fruitvale Station made more per theater than Turbo.)
