If you thought Netflix movies were going to continue to be a bunch of bad Adam Sandler comedies with a smattering of quality you better take a long look at 2017. The studio, because that’s what it is now, is going all out. We’ve already seen the trailer for a David Ayer blockbuster starring will Smith, the foreign film Okja, and the news that Scorsese next film will be through Netflix, and now lands the trailer for War Machine.
Brad Pitt, based-on-a-true-story, political. If Netflix isn’t gunning for an Oscar then they’re doing not gunning for an Oscar wrong.
The movie is about general Stanley McChrystal, who led the Afghan forces for some time under Obama. He kind of had a bit of a fall if you don’t remember. The film promises to be part parody and part reality, but the big deal here is whether or not Netflix can pull off a star-driven indy darling and whether or not releasing a film almost entirely over streaming will hurt it. There’s still a lot of stigma on “direct to video” films, even if War Machine does get a limited theatrical release.
Oh, and in case you were concerned about there not being enough famous people in the movie, here’s the rest of the cast: Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Emory Cohen, John Magaro, RJ Cyler, Alan Ruck, Scoot McNairy, and Meg Tilly.
